St James murder toll now 91
WESTERN BUREAU – Two more people were murdered in St James on Sunday, pushing the parish’s murder toll for the year to 91.
The deceased were identified as Andrew Barton, 30, of Hendon Norwwod and Brenda Gayle, 42, of Canterbury. Barton was killed after he was called from his house by men, while Gayle was stabbed by a woman during a quarrel in her community.
Jessica Jennings, 21, of Canterbury, has since been charged with the murder of Gayle.
According to the police, Barton was at a birthnight party for a younger relative when he was called outside by someone known to him. However, when he opened the door he was shot in the upper body. He was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Gayle was at her shop on Sunday when Jennings, with whom she had a fuss, got involved in a heated argument with her. Gayle, the police said, allegedly used a machete to chop Jennings at the back of the head. Jennings, the police said, allegedly used a knife to stab Gayle in her chest during the fight. Gayle was taken to the Cornwall Regional Hospital where she later died.
Jennings’ mother, who gave her name only as “Doreen”, said the conflict had to do with her daughter’s impregnation by the deceased nephew.
