GG urges J’cans in the UK to share their experiences
THE governor-general, Sir Howard Cooke, has urged Jamaicans in the United Kingdom to visit their homeland to share their talent and experiences and to look at the new developments taking place in the island.
Sir Howard, who was speaking at a community meeting hosted by the Jamaican High Commission in London last week, said it was important for overseas Jamaicans to share their experiences in order to help with the development of the country.
Sir Howard also attended a special ceremony in his honour in Watford, organised by the Watford African Caribbean Association.
“We are asking everyone to come home for two weeks or a month and tell the people in the area from where you came, how and why you have been blessed and how God has been good to you.
“. Identify some of the things to be done. Then you should go to the preachers, the teachers, the lawyers and the businessmen and say you have done well but let me tell you how other people do it elsewhere,” urged the governor-general.
Sir Howard told the Jamaicans that the Homecoming Programme was gaining momentum across the island and there were plans for a “general expression” between October 16 and 23.
The Homecoming Programme, he added, had seen communities coming together and working on projects to benefit entire parishes.
“Go back to your old school and help whitewash a building, help to put up some retaining walls or establish a playground, because there is a new momentum in the Jamaican situation today. It is not only the economy and it’s not only how much money you can earn. Great things are happening out there and you can come and put some solidarity into what we are doing. There is a new momentum, so we need you to come and participate,” Sir Howard said.
