Ivan’s trail of death

Hurricane Ivan has either directly or indirectly claimed the lives of 18 people across the island. According to the Constabulary Communication Network, the fatalities are as follows:

Kingston and St Andrew

. The body of 24 year-old Orito Lawrence of Rodney Street, Jones Town, Kingston 12 was found afloat at Breezy Castle, Kingston Harbour, last Friday.

. Thirty-five year-old Sonia Hayden was crushed to death after a tree fell through the roof of her house at Mountain View Avenue last Friday. About 9:30 pm she was in bed when strong winds uprooted a guinep tree that fell on her house. Hayden’s common-law husband also sustained a broken leg.

. Thirty-seven year-old Carmen Clarke was killed after her house collapsed on her during a land slippage at Unity District, Lawrence Tavern, about 11:30 pm Saturday.

. Forty-four year-old Donald Carnegie along with his three children – nine-year-old Danisha, eight-year-old Donald Jr and six-year-old Nyron – perished when their house at Mount Salus District in Stony Hill, St Andrew, was inundated with mud and other debris last Saturday. Carnegie was preparing meals when the incident occurred.

. Seventy-six year-old Icilda Sauer-Linder was burnt to death in a fire which destroyed her four apartment house at Diamond Way, Norbrook, Kingston 6 last Sunday at about 7:45 am.

The Constant Spring police who are investigating say that the fire was caused by a stand-by generator which exploded.

St Catherine

. Natalee Spence, 23, of Church Pen District was in bed when a guinep tree fell through her roof, killing her at about 11:35 pm last Friday.

. The body of 30 year-old Victoria Francis of Hartland District was found by a relative about 8:00 am last Saturday. Francis was swept away by flood waters.

Clarendon

. Seventy-nine year-old Alfred McKenzie died when his Portland Cottage house collapsed on him last Friday.

. Lorna Bajjo, 44; three-year-old Tiffany Thompson; and her two-year-old sister Lussan Thompson were killed when they were swept away in flood waters. These bodies were found last Saturday. At about 11:30 am last Sunday, during further searches in the area, the bodies of eight-year-old Autwain Edwards and 51 year-old Jestina Gopie, the grandmother of the Thompson siblings, were found in flood waters.

Manchester

. Ronald Wright, a 72 year-old mason of Contrivance District in Walderston was found dead in his house last Saturday after neighbours discovered that his roof was missing.
