UK Gov’t donates physical education textbooks
THE British Government last week donated 150 physical education textbooks to the Ministry of Education, Youth and Culture.
British High Commissioner to Jamaica Peter Mathers, who handed over the books to assistant chief education officer Phyllis Reynolds and the education officer responsible for physical education Dr Joyce Graham-Royal at the High Commission on Trafalgar Road in Kingston, said he hoped the texts would be used in the holistic education of the students. “When educating people, you educate them holistically,” he said.
Reynolds, in thanking the British Government, said the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) would be administering the first ever physical education examination next year and the texts should prove helpful to students sitting the test.
At the same time, Graham-Royal said that schools slated to sit students for the examinations would be given first consideration in the distribution of the texts.
The books are the first of this kind to be used in Jamaica’s education system and will be incorporated into the secondary school curriculum. They are considered to be user-friendly and will be used for the teaching of science and social studies in addition to physical education.
