More rains cause road blocks in St Mary, Portland
MORE rains in St Mary and Portland yesterday left several roads in the parishes blocked or reduced to single-lane traffic because of landslips and breakaways, the National Works Agency said.
The agency’s communication manager Vando Palmer said the Grande Hole to Golden Valley, Chovey to Claremont, Highgate to Windsor Castle, Gayle to Guys Hill, Rio Nuevo to Lambkin Hill and Windsor Castle to Lambkin Hill roads in St Mary were reduced to single lane traffic.
“A recurring landslip on the Broadgate to Toms River main road in the vicinity of Castleton Gardens requires continuous monitoring and clearing. This is due to over saturation of the soil from the continuous heavy rainfall,” Palmer said.
In Portland, he said, a section of the Wakesfield to Hardwar Gap main road collapsed between mile posts 25 & 26, below the Cascade Primary and Junior High School, while the section to the Silver Hill Gap main road remained blocked. The latter was, however, accessible from St Andrew.
The Buff Bay to Balcarres, Balcarres to Wakesfield, Tranquality to Bangor Ridge and Spring Garden to Chepstowe main roads were open to single lane traffic, Palmer said.
The NWA last night urged motorists to drive with caution on the affected roads and observe the instructions of flag persons and posted warning signs.
Meanwhile, the National Works Agency yesterday closed the Tulloch Bailey bridge in St Catherine.
The agency said an inspection by its technical team, after the recent rains, revealed significant erosion to the abutment of the bridge.
The alternative route is through Cashew Walk, West Prospect, Knollis into Tulloch and vice versa.
