Driver killed in accident, 10-year-old tourist seriously injured
A pre-dawn accident Sunday between a truck and a minibus along the St Ann’s Bay to Ocho Rios main road has resulted in one death, and hospitalisation of a 10-year-old girl from Connecticut, United States.
Shaun Young, 30, from Church Street, Montego Bay, the driver of the JUTA minibus, died while undergoing treatment at hospital.
Jeff Babineau, 41, his wife Donna, and 10-year-old daughter Erin, all of Pilgrim Lane, Connecticut, were injured; Erin seriously.
Two other children from the family of five travelling in the Toyota Townace minibus, registered PB 3584, escaped injury.
According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) liaison officer for St Ann, Constable Courtney Johnson, at around 4:35 am Sunday, Young was transporting the family, who had just arrived in the island, to a hotel in St Mary.
The bus collided with a Kenwood truck – driven by 34 -year-old Richard Damali of Agualta Vale, Annotto Bay in St Mary and licensed 1021 BZ – at Roaring River in St Ann.
The injured were all taken to the St Ann’s Bay Hospital where Erin was admitted in critical condition.
Sources told the Observer that Erin was later flown by helicopter to the Sangster International Airport then flown, along with her relatives, back to the United States for emergency treatment.
The hospital declined to comment.
On Sunday, Johnson told the Observer that investigators were yet to determine exactly how the accident occurred but investigations were ongoing.
The driver of the truck, Richard Damali, 34, of Agualta Vale, Annotto Bay, St Mary was not in police custody.
