American dies in fall from hotel balcony
WESTERN BUREAU – A United States national registered as a guest at the Holiday Inn Hotel Sunspree Resort, one of Montego Bay’s largest hotels, died from injuries he received in a fall at about 11:00 pm Tuesday.
John Adams, 51, of Wayne Field, Ohio, fell from the hotel’s third floor.
Reports from the Constabulary Communications Network in St James say Adams was attempting to gain entry to his room, via the balcony, when he lost his balance and fell.
He sustained multiple injuries and was taken to the MoBay Hope Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Carol Gardens police are investigating.
Contacted for comment, Holiday Inn referred the Observer to its parent office in Atlanta, Georgia, the Intercontinental Hotel Group.
“If you want a statement you would have to get one from Darrel Chaneyfield from the corporate office in Atlanta,” said a woman in the executive offices, having advised that Sunspree general manager Guillermo Valencia was not available.
Last night, IHG issued a statement saying the company was cooperating with investigators.
“Initial reports indicate that the guest may have been trying to climb up to the balcony of his room when he fell to the ground,” said the statement. “Intercontinental Hotels Group holds the safety, comfort and well being of Holiday Inn hotel guests as a top priority and concern, and is working with local authorities in the investigation of the accident.”
The hotel was only re-opened in December after undergoing US$5 million of repairs to damage sustained last September when Hurricane Ivan hit the island.
