Doctor accused of rape picked out at ID parade
THE doctor who was accused of sexually abusing a patient at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital nearly two weeks ago was positively identified by his complainant in an identification parade at the Denham Town police station yesterday.
According to Deputy Superintendent Derrick Knight, the doctor, whose name is still being withheld, was singled out from a line-up of nine persons at about 2:30 pm yesterday.
“He will be interviewed and then charged,” Knight told the Observer. “He will appear before the court on Monday.”
The doctor remains in custody at the Denham Town police station.
UTech students demonstrate
HUNDREDS of students of the University of Technology (UTech) yesterday demonstrated at the main entrance to the university in Kingston to protest against the failure of the school’s administration to provide them with progress reports on their performance for last term.
The angry, placard-bearing students formed a human barricade at the entrance to the university and prevented vehicles from entering the compound. Behind them were bands of yellow tape marked ‘police do not cross’, used by cops at crime scenes.
“The administration is dead and needs a forensic investigation. We were promised that we would have gotten the progress reports one week from the term opened in January and then we were promised that they would be handed out yesterday (Thursday), but we have not yet received them,” said Duhane Telphia, a student.
Corporate communications manager at UTech Hector Wheeler said the hitch in delivering the reports were due to the unfamiliarity of the staff with the new computer system.
Section of Spanish Town bypass collapses
A section of the Spanish Town bypass, in the vicinity of the salt factory, collapsed yesterday afternoon, forcing the National Works Agency to create a single lane detour to facilitate the tidal flow traffic in the evening.
Vando Palmer, the NWA’s communication manager, said an emergency crew was expected to carry out repairs to the road last night.
In the meantime, motorists were advised to use Highway 2000 or travel through Spanish Town.
Palmer asked motorists not to use Windsor Road to get to the Spanish Town link road, as the police reported that motorists were being robbed along that roadway.
