Amended budget to be tabled in Parliament
THE second supplementary estimates for 2004/2005 will be tabled in the House of Representatives today by finance minister Dr Omar Davies.
The estimates will detail any further changes in the annual budget, following the $3.4 billion added last December in the first supplementary estimates.
The estimates are to be reviewed by the Standing Finance Committee of the House of Representatives, which is comprised of all 60 Members of Parliament, tomorrow morning, and returned to the House at 2:00 pm for passage.Bankers give $1.8m to sponsor scholarships for 40 students
Patrick Hylton, vice-president of the Jamaica Bankers’ Association (JBA), has handed over $1.8 million to the Area 4 Police Civic Committee as sponsorship for scholarships for students living in the police division.
The JBA had committed to assist 40 students with grants of $15,000 each over a three-year span.
The funds that Hylton presented to chairman of the civic committee Ferris Zaidie on Wednesday, covers the three years.
There are five police subdivisions in Area 4, each of which will get eight scholarships for students of 12 to 18 years who show financial need.
Man dies of severe malnutrition in Port Antonio
A post mortem performed on a body found in an abandoned building on West Street in Port Antonio has determined that severe malnutrition was the cause of death, the police have reported.
The police have said that the man was about 50 years old, but do not know his identity.
He was found by a passerby Saturday morning. The post mortem was done on-spot on the decomposing remains. The body was clad in black pants and a grey and red shirt. The hair was dreadlocked.
The Port Antonio police are investigating the death.
