Doctor, nurse in rape scandal get bail
MATT Myrie, the gynaecologist charged with the rape of a patient in the ultrasound room at the Victoria Jubilee Hospital, was yesterday offered bail in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court after the police assured the court that the complainant was under protective custody.
Myrie was offered bail by Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle in the sum of $500,000, with three sureties. He was ordered to surrender his travel documents to the police and a stop order has been put out for him at all ports. Myrie has also been ordered by the court to report to the Matilda’s Corner Police Station every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday between the hours of 8:00 am to 8:00 pm.
He will return to court on April 11.
Janet Spence, the nurse who was charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice after she allegedly approached the alleged victim and offered her a bribe of $500,000 to drop the charges against Myrie, was also offered bail.
Spence was offered $300,000 bail with the same conditions as those of Myrie and will return to court on May 18 for a preliminary inquiry.
The prosecution did not oppose the bail applications made by attorneys Carl Mitchell and Hugh Thompson, who represent Spence and Myrie, respectively.
The woman who pressed charges against the doctor was allegedly threatened, forcing the presiding magistrate to deny bail when the accused appeared in court on Tuesday. The magistrate said he was not convinced that the complainant was safe.
The complainant, according to investigating officer Inspector Duetress Foster-Gardner of the Centre for Investigation of Sexual Offences and Child Abuse (CISOCA), has been traumatised and was undergoing treatment.
Police say the alleged rape occurred at about 2:30 pm on February 26, two days after the complainant suffered a miscarriage.
The doctor was handed over to cops at CISOCA by his attorney and was taken to Denham Town Police Station where he was charged with two counts of rape and two counts of indecent assault.
