Rights poll today at RIU Tropical Bay
THE more than 300 line service employees of the Spanish hotel chain RIU’s Tropical Bay resort will today take part in a representational rights poll at the hotel.
The decision to hold the poll was announced last week by the Ministry of Labour and Social Security which had been processing the claim by the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) to represent the workers.
The union earlier accused the management of the “union busting” claiming that workers were being intimidated for signing membership forms. The management did not respond, but the matter was investigated by the Ministry and an agreement was eventually reached to hold the poll today between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm.
The Tropical Bay location is one of three investments by the RIU group in Jamaica’s tourism sector. The others are in Negril and Mammee Bay.
