Pooja Gurnani: Scotia Bank Scholarship (Top Girl)
MONTEGO BAY, St James – The Mount Alvernia Prep School in Montego Bay was yesterday in a celebratory mood following the announcement that three of its students were successful in gaining scholarships in this year’s GSAT exams which, included the Scotia Bank Scholarship for the top girl which went to Pooja Gurnani.
The others were Khin Aung, 11, and Anika Hall who gained government scholarships.
Pooja, 12, who will attend the Mount Alvernia High School for girls was also very happy about her achievement.
“I am proud of myself and I would really like to thank my teachers and my parents who gave me all the support that I needed,” she told the Observer.
“I had a lot of confidence in myself and I knew that I would do well,” added Pooja, who says wants to become a fashion designer.
The two teachers, Rose-Ann Whitter and Akeisha Christie who guided the students were also proud of their charges.
Christie who teaches Science and English, and was preparing GSAT students for the first time, commended the students for their hard work and dedication.
“They have sacrificed time and have put in a lot of hard work,” Christie noted.
Whitter said that over the past 10 years, the students have copped in the region of 20 scholarships.
She too has attributed the success level at the institution to hard work and the dedication of the entire teaching staff and the students.
