Power cuts to continue until next Tuesday
THE Jamaica Public Service (JPS) said last night that power cuts, now being experienced islandwide due to a shortfall in its generating capacity, will continue until next Tuesday.
The light and power company said since January, two of its larger units, the Old Harbour number 4 engine and the Bogue Steam Turbine engine in Montego Bay, which produce 100 megawatts or 14 per cent of the islands generating capacity, have been out of service for routine maintenance.
“In addition, problems have developed on a number of other units, in particular the Old Harbour No 3 unit, Rockfort and the B6 unit at Hunts Bay. This has resulted in the company having to programme these units out of service to effect urgent repairs to prevent long term damage.
“We have also had to facilitate urgent repairs on units from some of our independent power producers,” the company said in a statement last night.
