Cop charged with receiving stolen car remanded
CONSTABLE Lawrence Wood, the Manchester-based policeman charged with receiving stolen property, was yesterday remanded in custody when he appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court.
The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported that on Friday, April 1, a Toyota Corolla motor car was robbed from the driver at Dunrobin Plaza in Kingston.
“On Wednesday, May 18, Constable Wood was seen driving the motor car along Hope Road.
“The police were alerted and he was taken into custody. Statements were collected and sent to the DPP who ruled that he should be charged,” said the CCN.
All parishes on flood watch
ALL 14 parishes were yesterday under a flash flood watch, as the area of disturbed weather associated with a tropical wave continue to affect the island.
The National Meteorological Service yesterday advised fishermen and other marine interests to exercise caution due to strong winds and deteriorating sea conditions in the vicinity of showers and thunderstorms.
No JUTC buses for Knutsford Blvd for most of today
JAMAICA Urban Transit Company buses will not be running on Knutsford Boulevard today from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, because the road will be closed for a farmers’ market.
Route 83 will today take Belmont Road/Worthington Avenue on its Half-Way-Tree to Downtown leg. Route 76 will use Belmont Road/Worthington Avenue on both legs of its trip. Route 12A will terminate in Half-Way-Tree and not continue into New Kingston.
Phillips meets with Colombia VP
National Security Minister Dr Peter Phillips, who is in charge of the government in the absence of Prime Minister P J Patterson, met today with the Colombia’s vice-president Dr Francisco Santo and his delegation at Jamaica House.
The security ministry said both men spoke extensively on several issues of mutual interest, including the strengthening of the bilateral agreement signed by Dr Phillips in Colombia in 2002. The vice-president offered further assistance in Jamaica’s fight against drug trafficking.
The vice-president paid a brief visit to the island to drum up support for the candidature of Ambassador Luis Alberto Moreno for the position of President of the Inter-American Development Bank. The election is set for July 27.
Jamaica is, however, yet to take a position on the upcoming election for the IDB presidency which is to be discussed by Caribbean Community heads of government at their meeting next month in St Lucia. The presidency of IDB is currently being held by Uruguayan Enrique Inglesias.
