Four cops facing car theft charges remanded
FOUR police constables were yesterday remanded in custody and ordered fingerprinted when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court to answer to charges of conspiracy and receiving stolen goods yesterday.
The four policemen – constables Kevron Williams, Andre Williams, Floyd Hutchinson and Nicholas Haynes – were arrested by officers from the Bureau of Special Investigations last week after the Professional Standards Branch launched a major probe into an alleged car stealing ring which included police officers, soldiers and civilians.
Andre Williams has been slapped with six conspiracy charges while Kevron Williams is facing one count of conspiracy. Haynes is facing two charges of receiving stolen good and one conspiracy charge, while Hutchinson is facing one charge of receiving stolen goods and one charge of conspiracy.
Deputy Superintendent Maurice Goodgame of the Bureau of Special Investigations told the court that Andre Williams was the middle man and sourced Honda Civic motor cars and fraudulent documents for his colleagues.
“Andre Williams acted as the contact man. He made contact and took the men to a spot. Fraudulent documents were obtained and given to them. He is the main man,” Goodgame told presiding magistrate Judith Pusey.
The prosecution also argued that Hutchinson was found in possession of a Honda Civic motor car which was stolen in April last year.
Haynes, the police said, was found with two Honda Civic motor cars. Both cars, the police said, were stolen in May last year. The chassis numbers on all the vehicles were also changed, the court was told.
“Kevron Williams was driving one of the cars when he realised something was wrong and called Haynes who sent Andre Williams to move it,” Goodgame said.
Attorney Patrick Bailey, who represented Hutchinson, pleaded with RM Pusey to separate Hutchinson’s case and grant him bail.
“He genuinely believed he was driving a car that was unblemished,” Bailey said.
“You don’t buy a Honda Accord for $500,000 under a mango tree. Not in a climate where cars are being stolen left, right and centre. These men are police officers. It is incumbent upon them to be vigilant,” RM Pusey replied.
Hutchinson is stationed at the Mobile Reserve, Kevron Williams works at the Organised Crime Investigative Division, while Andre Williams and Haynes worked out of the Motorised Patrol Division.
Attorneys Peter Champagnie, Tom Tavares-Finson and Berry Bryan represented Kevron Williams, Andre Williams and Haynes, respectively.
A woman constable, who was arrested during the investigation, will be brought before the court on Friday, the police said.
