Husband remanded in acid attack case
MICHAEL Laoe, who is charged with conspiracy and aiding and abetting to throw a pail full of corrosive substance on his wife, was remanded in custody when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court Wednesday.
Laoe’s wife was attacked as she disembarked a bus in the vicinity of the tax collectorate on Constant Spring Road on June 10.
A man approached her from behind and doused her with black acid causing severe third degree burns over 40 per cent of her body. The injured woman is still in hospital.
An angry mob chased the woman’s attacker and stoned him to death in nearby hills after the incident.
Laoe’s lawyer, Althea Grant, in applying for bail, told Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey that Laoe had turned himself over to the police and was at his home when the attack on his wife occurred.
But the prosecution told the court that Laoe was seen by an eyewitness running away from the scene when the acid attack occurred.
Laoe will be brought back to court on July 14.
