Acid attack case returns to court July 27
MICHAEL Laoe, who is charged with aiding and abetting and conspiracy to douse his wife, Charmaine, with a pail of black acid, was remanded until July 27, when his case will be called up again in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court.
Laoe’s wife was attacked from behind seconds after she disembarked a public passenger bus near to the tax collectorate on Constant Spring Road in Kingston where she worked.
A man approached her and threw a pail of black liquid, said to be battery acid, at her. The attack caused severe burns over 40 per cent of the woman’s body. She is still hospitalised.
After the incident an angry mob chased the woman’s attacker and stoned and chopped him to death in the nearby Honey Hill behind the tax office.
When Laoe last appeared in court his attorney, Althea Grant, told the magistrate that her client was at home when the incident occurred and had turned himself over to the Greater Portmore police when he heard he was wanted in connection with the attack on his wife.
But the prosecution countered by saying Laoe was seen running away from the incident after the attack.
Last week, an appeal for assistance in funding for the injured woman’s medical bills was launched by her co-workers at the tax collectorate.
