Child injured in crossfire between police, alleged gunman
A six-year-old child was yesterday shot and injured during crossfire between police and an alleged gunman on Spanish Town Road in Kingston.
It was not immediately clear whose bullet hit the child, but residents of McKoy Lane yesterday blocked a section of the Spanish Town Road to protest against the incident. The roadblock was eventually cleared by police.
The child, who was shot in the ankle, was last night said to be in a stable condition.
In the meantime, the Hunts Bay police said they were hunting for the man they say engaged them in the shoot-out.
Police gave the man’s name as Nico Brown, also known as ‘Gun Gun’, ‘Brown Man’ and ‘Baller’.
Brown was recently released on bail on gun-related and extortion charges and police said they believe he was involved in at least three murders in that St Andrew South Police Division.
According to the police, Brown is a former member of the Spanish Town-based Klansman gang who fled the old capital last October and has been hiding in the McKoy Lane area.
According to Superintendent Oswald Eyre of the Hunts Bay Criminal Investigative Bureau, a police party was on patrol in the vicinity of McKoy Lane when they saw Brown and attempted to accost him. “He opened fire on the police and a shoot-out ensued. It was during the crossfire that the little boy got shot,” Eyre said.
