Annual textbook survey
THE annual textbook survey results have revealed what the Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) refers to as “moderate” price movements, saying only three per cent of surveyed texts were increased by 30 per cent and above relative to last year.
Of 100 primary and high school texts sampled in the survey done over July and August, the consumer watchdog found that 97 books had increases that stayed under 30 per cent.
The three that went higher were:
Espanol Para La Vida 4: CXC examination levels by Zena Moore.
Hexagone (Book 1): A French text by Ken Foden.
Economics: A Student’s Guide 5th Edition by J Breadshaw et al.
“The marginal increases for most texts, therefore, fell within a band that reconciles with the expected increases,” said CAC.
That conclusion, it said, is based on an estimated one per cent devaluation year on year of the Jamaican dollar relative to the US dollar; external increases in publishers fees; and increases in overall operating costs for retailers.
