Policeman shot and injured
A police constable from the Bridgeport police station was shot and seriously injured during an attack by a lone gunman as he was about to enter his home in Greater Portmore, St Catherine on Friday afternoon.
The Constabulary Communications Network reports that about 5:00 pm on Friday, the constable drove up to his home and parked at his gate.
As the cop came out of the car he was attacked by a lone gunman who opened fire at him. The cop returned the fire and the man escaped in the area. The cop was discovered shot and taken to hospital where his condition has been listed as serious.
The cop is the second police constable to be injured by gunmen’s bullets on Friday. A police constable from the Hunts Bay station was shot in the left arm after a team of officers responded to reports of gunfire on the volatile Maxfield Avenue in Kingston.
The cops say they were confronted by two armed men who challenged them to a shoot out. The men ran leaving behind a 12 gauge shotgun and six 12 gauge cartridges.
Two persons Kerdel Salmon, 52, and her employee Warren Newby, were killed only minutes before the cops arrived on the scene.
Earlier that day a mob beat and badly injured Omar Gayle of Mount Moreland in St Catherine and a homemade handgun which he had in his possession taken from him and handed over to the police.
Police say Gayle is accused of firing shots at residents of Mount Moreland during an altercation. He was later seen in a section of the rural district and held by the mob who beat him before handing him over to police.
Gayle has since been charged by the Sligoville Police with illegal possession of a firearm and shooting with intent.
In St Catherine Alford Needham of Frazer’s Content, Spanish Town was stabbed to death during a dispute with his younger brother Sheldon Needham over a piece of board.
A knife was used to stab Alford who died while being treated in the Spanish Town Hospital.
Sheldon Needham has since been arrested and charged with his brother’s murder.
In another stabbing incident 45 year-old Lascelles Williams of Lilliput in St James was also killed on Friday. Police say Williams and 20 year-old Dwayne Smith, also called ‘Zeeks’, were involved in a dispute on a construction site at Georges Plain in Westmoreland. Williams was stabbed during a tussle and succumbed to his wounds in the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital.
The police also report that they seized a Taurus semi-automatic pistol with three .40 rounds of ammunition at a premises at Capture Land in Retirement, St James. Two persons have been arrested in connection with the find.
The cops say they conducted a pre-dawn raid at a premises occupied by the two at ‘Capture Land’. During the raid the cops say they found the weapon and arrested 28-year-old Craig Robinson, also called Garfield and Eulalee Williams, also called ‘Salom’.
