54 year-old woman on gun charge
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Verona Williams, 54, whom police say was hiding a gun which belonged to her 24-year-old son, was yesterday arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
The police said the woman’s 10-year-old grandson, who they alleged was being used to transport the weapon, was also taken into custody by the police.
The woman’s son, whose name was not released by the police, was arrested by the police on Monday.
Williams resides at Cave Valley in St James.
Head of the Area One Police, Assistant Commissioner Keith “Trinity” Gardner told reporters yesterday that following the arrest of the 24 year-old man Monday evening in Cave Valley, his mother allegedly took the illegal firearm – a semi-automatic pistol – which he was carrying and hid it.
The weapon, he said, was found during a raid yesterday. Williams was subsequently taken into custody and charged.
The woman’s 10 year-old grandson, said Gardener, “will in a short while, be put in the care of the competent authorities who we will be contacting”.
Said Gardner: “We have made inquiries and have learned that he attends school regularly; that he is a promising child. We would not want to do anything to compromise the child’s future.”
