Are you in danger of being fired from your job?
RECENT statistics show that more than one million people are fired every year in the United States. Other than downsizing, employees are losing their jobs because they lack the work ethic desired by employers.
A good work ethic is essential to being a respected and valued employee, said Mike Farr, executive producer of the video “You’re Fired!”
“The top three reasons employers say they fire workers are: having a poor relationship with their supervisor, poor job performance and dishonesty,” Farr said.
Too often, employees don’t look at the job they have now as an opportunity to learn and grow. They may feel stuck in a job they don’t enjoy or that does not seem to have a future. Over time they develop a bad attitude or work habits that end up getting them fired.
They fail to understand that their current job is an opportunity to build job skills, gain recommendations and create professional relationships that will help them throughout their careers, Farr said.
“If you have a good work ethic, you’ll be in the best position possible to move onward and upward whether it’s a promotion at your present job or advancement to another organisation,” Farr said.
Farr offers the following advice:
Employees can build and maintain a good work ethic by asking their supervisor for advice and feedback on their performance.
They should be friendly and professional in their interactions with their supervisor. If they are not satisfied with their job, they should ask their supervisor about taking on more challenges or ways to improve their skills. By being positive about their work, co-workers and their role in the organisation, others will see the employee in a positive way, which leads to job retention and success.
If employees look at each job they have as a chance to learn more, make new contacts and polish their skills, they’re making themselves a desirable commodity to employers – and they’re also laying the foundation for a successful career.
