NHDC plans to offer more open-market schemes
THE National Housing Development Corporation (NHDC) has announced plans to undertake a number of housing projects targeted at middle and upper middle income home buyers.
In a recent interview with JIS News, Rosemarie Brown, manager of project development at the NHDC, said the corporation was completing preparatory work for the implementation of a number of projects under its open market portfolio, which was a continuation of the work started by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) many years ago.
“Throughout St Andrew, you can find well maintained schemes developed by the NHC. We would like to continue developing on that legacy. As such, we are now looking at a few open market schemes that are on the drawing board,” Brown said.
The NHC, which was developed in the early 1980s as an agency of the ministry of housing, was charged with providing housing for middle-income and upper-middle income earners. Some of the schemes developed by the NHC include Oaklands, Arcadia, Wellington Glades, and College Green in St Andrew. In 1998, the NHC was incorporated into the NHDC.
The schemes in the NHDC’s open market portfolio include townhouses, apartment complexes and serviced lots, and are either implemented by the corporation independently or as joint venture projects with other developers.
Projects to be undertaken in this latest open market offering include the Wellington Heights and Lady Musgrave (62 Lady Musgrave Road) projects in St Andrew, the White River scheme in St Ann and the Mineral Heights scheme in Clarendon.
The corporation will also be participating in a joint venture development at Stadium Gardens in St Andrew, and has been marketing 60 duplex units in Ensom Green, St Catherine.
There are also a number of other sites that are being examined for possible development, Brown said, adding that these plans are still in the preliminary stages.
