Ministry convenes talks to avert trouble in bauxite sector
THE Ministry of Labour and Social Security has scheduled a meeting for this morning to discuss a 72-hour strike notice served on Jamalco in Clarendon by the Union of Technical, Administrative and Supervisory Personnel (UTASP).
The ministry confirmed last night that it had called the meeting to discuss the dispute between UTASP and the management of Jamalco overtime compensation for some 150 supervisory and clerical workers.
The notice takes effect next Monday at 9:00 pm.
The Observer also understands that a second strike notice has since been issued by the union, warning that about 250 contracted workers, for whom the union is seeking bargaining rights, will not break the picket lines if there is a strike by the UTASP-represented employees.
The issuing of a strike notice prior to industrial action is a requirement in the bauxite/alumina industry under the Labour Relations and Industrial Disputes Act (LRIDA).
