MoBay businessman ordered extradited
A St James man who the American government said was wanted in the USA for drug trafficking was ordered extradited Tuesday in the Half-Way-Tree Criminal Court.
Senior Resident Magistrate Martin Gayle made the order for Presley Bingham, 41, otherwise called ‘Butcherman’ and ‘Pressa’, of Lilliput, St James to be sent to the US for trial.
Bingham, a Montego Bay businessman who eluded local police for over a year, was captured in Montego Bay by members of Jamaica’s Fugitive Apprehension Team (FAT) backed by the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) in May last year during a crackdown on high-profile suspected drug dealers based in Montego Bay.
US prosecutors alleged that Bingham conspired with other persons to import over five kilograms of cocaine and over 1,000 kilograms of ganja into Florida or a distance of 12 miles off the US coast.
The US government has submitted to the police the names of a number of alleged drug smugglers who are wanted on indictment to stand trial but who have eluded the authorities there.
In a special operation last year, narcotics police arrested Leebert Ramcharan; Donovan ‘Plucky’ Williams; Robroy ‘Spy’ Williams, farmer and owner of the sound system Jah Creation; car wash operator Vivian ‘Jungle’ Dally; Norris ‘Dedo’ Nembhard; police corporal Herbert ‘Scary’ Henry; Glenford Williams; and Colombian national Louis Arias.
Ramcharan and Williams lost their fight against extradition and have appealed the order.
The cases of the other men are pending court hearing.
