Young man shot dead at Espeut and Waltham intersection
KEMAR Harris, alias “Onie”, 22, who relatives said had left his home yesterday morning to purchase car parts, was killed by gunmen at the intersection of Espeut Avenue and Waltham Park Road.
Residents of Espeut Avenue, where Harris resided, said the incident took place at about 11:30 while Harris was sitting at the usually busy intersection. Two men, they said, came out of a motor car and began firing at Harris, hitting him several times over the body. They escaped in the car which was waiting nearby. Harris was pronounced dead at the Kingston Public Hospital.
Six spent shells were found at the shooting scene, police said.
“Trust me him no do nothing,” said a woman who claimed that she witnessed the shooting.
“Him sit down a de corner when me see a Mark 2 car drive past him a go park over de bar side. After that two man come out and cross the road and just start fi shoot him up,” she added.
The dead man’s mother and sister, who refused to give their names, cried uncontrollably at the shooting scene. “Whe him do, whe him do, some body tell me nuh?” asked the mother as the tears rolled down her cheeks.
Another relative said that Harris had just left to purchase parts for his car that was in the garage, and that she shortly heard the barrage of gunshots. “.After which me run go up deh only fi see me cousin dead.”
Residents of the area yesterday blamed the shooting of Harris on an ongoing gang feud in the community.
In the meantime, Detective Inspector Altemonth Campbell of the Hunts Bay Police believes that Harris’ death was in reprisal for a double murder in the Half Way Tree area earlier in January of this year.
He said there had been a feud among persons in the area, but things have been quite for a while.
Campbell asked for the cooperation of residents in helping to solve yesterday’s murder.
