Saving the UWI homework centre
On February 1, Sharian Hanson, a final year student of the University of the West Indies, Mona campus, will host a special benefit performance called ‘Movements to Care’ to raise funds for the UWI homework centre, which is on the brink of closure.
The performance, to be held at the Phillip Sherlock Centre for the Creative Arts at UWI, will feature guest performances by the UWI Dance Society, Edna Manley College School of Dance and the Wolmer’s Dance Troupe, said a news release announcing the event.
Tickets will cost $300, and $200 for UWI students and staff with identification.
The homework centre is an aftercare facility established in 1995 by the University Women’s Group from the Centre for Gender and Development Studies, catering to the children of UWI students and staff.
Hanson, who can be contacted by email at sharian.hanson@uwimona.edu.jm, has taken on the project of saving the centre in partial fulfillment of the requirements for her degree in media and communication.
