Peaceful demonstration in Oslo targets media, tolerance
OSLO, Norway (AP) – As many as 500 people staged a peaceful march in the Norwegian capital Saturday against cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed that angered Muslims worldwide.
The mainly Islamic protesters claimed that the news media abused free expression by printing cartoons that many Muslims consider blasphemous. Many carried signs with such texts as “Shame on you media for encouraging hatred and anger.”
The protest came a day after Norwegian Imams and 46 Islamic congregations declared the conflict over because the editor of Magazinet, a Norwegian newspaper that reprinted the Danish cartoons in January, apologized for offending Muslims.
The march went from the predominantly Muslim neighborhood of Groenland to Parliament.
