Two students awarded CARE scholarships
Members of the Caribbean Educators Association (CARE) have awarded scholarships to two graduating high school seniors of Caribbean descent.
The scholarship recipients are Kaidero Hutchinson, a Jamaican national of Pahokee Senior High School, who intends to attend Florida State University in Tallahassee, and Judith Olicia Monroe, a Bahamian national, who attends the Boyd Anderson High in Fort Lauderdale, and is desirous of attending the University of Central Florida in Orlando.
Dr Janice Cover, President of the organisation, launched March last year, commended members for their dedication and commitment through the growing stages.
Cover was addressing the first annual banquet held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, recently.
CARE also donated school supplies and toys to the Woodlawn School of Special Education in Mandeville, Jamaica.
Cover also noted that members of CARE were holding discussions with the Jamaican Government Education Reform Task Force with a view to providing professional support and development to educators in the country.
Ricardo Allicock, Jamaica’s Consul General, lauded members of CARE for the work they were doing in his address at the banquet.
He also extended congratulations to Prime Minister-designate, Portia Simpson-Miller, and the newly-appointed Principal of the University of the West Indies, Professor Elso Leo-Rhynie.
The Consul General also urged his audience to believe in the Diaspora movement and the role it was playing in nation building.
Allicock said in order for Jamaica and other Caribbean nations to achieve their full potential, it was necessary for all interested persons to become involved in efforts of nation building, through service and investment opportunities.
Similar sentiments were expressed by Southeast USA Advisory Board member of the Jamaica Diaspora Foundation, Dahlia Walker-Huntington, who also called on persons to increase and unleash the potential of the Diaspora for the benefit of communities abroad and at home.
