JLP wants protection for cement buyers
THE Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has called on Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller to take immediate action to protect the rights of the thousands of consumers who recently purchased sub-standard cement produced by the Caribbean Cement Company in Kingston.
Senator Shirley Williams, the party’s spokesperson on industry, commerce and investments, wants the prime minister to:
. establish a toll-free hotline to receive complaints from consumers who may have been affected by bad cement;
. provide technical assistance to consumers who may have used the sub-standard cement and are unable to afford the cost of professional services; and
. set up a unit to process claims for submission to the Cement Company.
Senator Williams said that the fate of consumers who have been affected cannot be left solely to the judgment or determination of the Cement Company.
