Guatemalan police officers drown after boat sinks
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (AP) – Two police officers drowned and one was missing after their boat capsized in high waves near the Pacific coast, authorities said yesterday.
The boat was carrying four police officers, four soldiers and two security officers when it flipped Friday night near the coastal town of Ocos, 181 kilometres (112 miles) west of Guatemala City, said Carlos Calju, spokesman for the National Police.
Many of the survivors managed to swim to the beach, while others were rescued by fire fighters, who arrived shortly after the accident, Calju said.
The boat was part of a nationwide plan to beef up security in tourist areas during holy week.
