Cops cut down MoBay wanted man
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Garfield Sawyers, who was on the Montego Bay police most wanted list, was killed by cops in an alleged shoot-out on the weekend.
In the meantime, Jason James, who was also wanted by the police, turned himself in, while another wanted man, Jason Lyttle, was apprehended during separate operations. They were being held for questioning.
According to the St James police, about 9:30 Sunday night, intelligence led officers to a house in the community of Niagra, where they were allegedly greeted by gunfire. The fire was returned and Sawyers, also called Don, of Hendon in Norwood, was found nursing gunshot wounds.
Police said Sawyers was found clutching a Colt .38 revolver containing four spent shells and three live rounds. The serial number of the weapon was erased, the police said.
Sawyers was said to be the leader of the Fresh Roses gang – one of four criminal gangs which the police have accused of terrorising residents of St James.
Police named the other gangs as:
. Stone Crushers, which has been operating in Glendevon and Norwood;
. Tight Pants, of Albion and Gully;
. One Order Gang, of Flanker; and
. Killer Bees gang, of Granville.
Meanwhile, the police said the other wanted men on their list were:
. Rohan Gordon, alias Don;
. Michael Forbes, alias Lassie and Diegol;
. Bryan Shaw, also called Yaws;
. Rohan Stennett;
. Marvin Stewart, of Sunvalley Road, and who worked at a car wash; and
. Cedric Murray, alias Doggie, of Glendevon.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Keith ‘Trinity’ Gardener, the Area One commander, last week asked members of the public to come forward with information to help the police flush out the members of the four gangs, which he said all operated in volatile communities in the city.
