Carib Cement boss denies he is leaving
ANTHONY Haynes, general manager of the Caribbean Cement Company, last night flatly denied rumours that he had resigned as head of the company’s Rockfort plant and would return to Trinidad at the end of the month.
“There is absolutely no truth in that. I will be going to Trinidad at the end of the month for a meeting, but will be back in Jamaica,” Haynes told the Observer.
Haynes was general manager at Trinidad Cement Limited (TCL), the parent company of Carib Cement, before taking the position in Jamaica.
The local cement manufacturer has been coming under fire since February when sub-standard cement was discovered on the market, forcing Carib Cement to recall a batch of 500 tonnes while offering compensation to purchasers who had bought the tainted product. A shortage of cement in the island followed the revelation.
The cement company later attributed the problem to a breakdown in quality control systems at the Rockfort plant.
Yesterday, at a Rotary Club of Kingston luncheon at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, Haynes said that as the head of the cement company he took full responsibility for the fallout in the cement trade since the start of the year.
