Over 68 win GSAT scholarships
More then 68 primary and prep school students islandwide won 2006 GSAT scholarships provided by the Government of Jamaica, through the Ministry of Education and its 12 private and public partners, the ministry announced yesterday.
Thirty-seven students who were awarded scholarships are from public schools, while 31 are from independent or private schools.
The 13 scholarships are: JAG Smith, Marcus Garvey, Paul Bogle, George William Gordon, Scotia Foundation, Aubrey Phillips Memorial (JTA), Horlicks, Blue Cross of Jamaica, Dr Mable Downer Memorial, Guardian Life, PetroJam Jamaica Ltd, Kraft and the Government Scholarships.
Raquel Whyte of Immaculate Conception Preparatory School and Kevin Robinson of Mt Alvernia Preparatory won the Scotia Bank scholarships for the Top Boy and the Top Girl. They have been placed at Immaculate Conception High and Cornwall College respectively. Scotia Bank also awarded scholarships to the top performing student in each county.
The Government Scholarships were awarded to 28 students: 14 boys and 14 girls, while the Horlicks Scholarship was awarded to a student attending a primary, all-age or primary and junior high school in each of the Ministry’s six regions islandwide.
Amonique Cunningham and Shane Richards, both of St Richards Primary School, received the JAG Smith and George William Gordon scholarships respectively. Amonique was awarded the Most Outstanding Girl from a Primary, All-Age or Primary and Junior High School, while Shane received the second place in a Primary, All-Age or Primary and Junior High School. The students were placed at Campion College and Immaculate respectively.
Hamesh Creighton of St Peter Claver Primary was awarded the Marcus Garvey Scholarship for the Top Boy from a Primary, All-Age and Primary and Junior High. He will attend Campion College.
Blue Cross of Jamaica awarded three scholarships to children of civil servants, three to children of teachers, two to children of Jamaica Constabulary Force members, and four to children of its commercial subscribers.
The top boy and girl of policy holders of Guardian Life Insurance Company were awarded scholarships and Petrojam Jamaica Ltd awarded scholarships to the top boy and girl from Greenwich All-Age School.
Primary school students in the island’s three counties who performed well in Mathematics received scholarships from Kraft Foods.
To access GSAT scholarships students should have performed very well in the examination sat in March of each year.
