Tea with Nelson Mandela to be auctioned for charity
JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) – Former South African president Nelson Mandela is offering to have tea with the highest bidder in an Internet auction to raise funds for a South African children’s heart clinic, organisers announced Thursday.
The announcement came as Mandela and former US president Bill Clinton toured the Walter Sisulu Pediatric Cardiac Centre for Africa, which was to benefit from the ‘Priceless Moments’ eBay auction that opens for bids November 6, South African TV reported.
Mandela and the winner of the bidding were to be joined at tea by Sisulu’s widow, Albertina Sisulu.
Walter Sisulu, whose stature in the fight against apartheid was second only to Mandela’s, died in 2003.
Bidders can also vie to spend time with one of several South African sports stars or for a brainstorming session with prominent South African businessmen.
The goal was to raise 80 million rands (about euro8 million; US$10 million) for the children’s heart unit opened the year Walter Sisulu died to train doctors from across the continent and treat children.
During Thursday’s tour, Clinton said he and his wife would pay for two operations for children at the centre as a birthday present for Mandela, who turns 88 next week.
