Deacon on sex charges again remanded in custody
DONOVAN Jones, the former deacon of the Church Dayton Diamond Ridge, and James Rogers, were again remanded in custody yesterday when they appeared in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court to answer to sexual assault charges.
Both are answering to charges in the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in the back of a van in April.
Yesterday, attorney Paul Beswick – who represents Jones, 46, and 18-year-old Rogers, who allegedly video-recorded the sexual assault of the young girl – cross-examined Detective W G Watson for over an hour. Watson was one of the officers who went on the police raid of the church and Jones’ home on July 5.
During his cross-examination, Beswick maintained that the police officers who went on the raid turned over incorrect information to the prosecution, which was in turn used by the prosecution to mislead the court. However, government prosecutor Hansurd Lawson, who is prosecuting the matter, told the Observer that the prosecution is standing behind the information that they have received from the police.
Beswick is expected to cross-examine several other officers when the case resumes today.
