Man pleads guilty to attempting to defraud $1.7m
A 50-year-old man this week pleaded guilty in the Half-Way-Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court to attempting to defraud Barita Investments Limited of over $1.7 million.
Hugo Lewis of Fleet Street, Kingston, pleaded guilty to the charges of forgery, uttering forged documents, conspiracy to defraud and obtaining money by forged documents before presiding magistrate Judith Pusey. He is to be sentenced on August 16.
Lewis, the court was told, was able to facilitate the fraud by stealing the identity of a man identified in court documents as Linton Augustus Brammer.
According to court documents, earlier this year, Lewis lodged several fraudulent cheques drawn on the account of Barita Trust Investments Limited to the account of Brammer, amounting to $1,763,300.
Lewis some time afterwards attempted to withdraw the money, and was arrested and charged.
