Boy, 14, among nine killed in bloody weekend
The Grim Reaper was busy over yet another bloody weekend, claiming nine lives, including that of a 14-year-old boy who was gunned down in broad daylight as he played in a yard at Central Village in St Catherine.
The trail of blood engulfed four parishes – Kingston, St Catherine, Clarendon and St James, with five of the killings occurring on Saturday and four on Friday, according to the police’s Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reports.
Police identified seven of the dead as:
. Deneil Motler, 14, of Brown’s Lane, Central Village;
. Aston Myrie, 30, of a Daisy Avenue, St Catherine address;
. Oniel Brooks, 23, sales clerk of Park Circle East, Passagefort, St Catherine;
. Courtney Gunter, 26, security guard of Nelson Road, Kingston 13;
. Horace Haye, 27, otherwise called “Rocky” of Delacree Lane, Kingston 11;
. Sanphan Green, 27 of Palmetto Pen in Clarendon; and
. Gary Clarke, 18, otherwise called “Don Junior” of Hog City, Flankers in St James.
The other two were unidentified at Observer press time.
Police said 14-year-old Deneil Motler was playing among a group of children in a yard at Brown’s Lane about 2:30 pm when a man known only as ‘Teleson’ approached him and engaged him in a brief conversation. ‘Teleson’ pulled a handgun and shot the boy who died at hospital, police said.
A nine year-old boy who was standing nearby was also shot and admitted at hospital in serious condition. Police did not reveal his identity.
Two hours earlier, Central Village was also the scene of crime where Aston Myrie was shot and killed by a group of gunmen who sprayed him with bullets near 12:20 pm, as he was standing at the intersection of Paisley Road and Spaulding Avenue.
Oniel Brooks was shot and killed by gunmen in Pasagefort about 9:40 pm. Police said he was walking with a female companion when he was confronted by gunmen – one armed with a gun and the other with a knife. After robbing the couple of a cellular phone and a chain, they opened fire, hitting Brooks who died on the spot. His companion escaped unhurt.
Courtney Gunter, who was involved in an altercation with his nephew, was stabbed to death at his home at Nelson Road, police reported. He succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital.
The Hunts Bay CIB is now looking for Octavious Gunter, otherwise called “Wayne” of Nelson Road in connection with the killing.
Three hours later, the body of Horace Haye was found with gunshot wounds on a pathway in the Delacree Lane community. He was shot and killed by unknown assailants when he went to buy food in the area, said CCN.
On Friday, two unidentified men were fatally shot at 6:45 am when they allegedly attempted to rob an ice factory in May Pen, the Clarendon capital. A firearm was also seized and a police officer injured during the incident.
At the same time, Sanphan Green of Palmetto Pen also in Clarendon was shot and killed by gunmen in the community. Police said Green was walking along a dirt track with a female companion about 10:30 pm when they were ambushed by gunmen who immediately opened fire hitting Green. He died on the spot. Green’s companion managed to escape unhurt.
In St James, Gary Clarke was fatally shot on Morgan’s Road in Ironshore in that parish. According to the police, Clarke was found suffering from gunshot wounds in bushes in the community following crossfire between the police and alleged hoodlums who robbed a man and a woman in Ironshore. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The Bureau of Special Investigation (BSI) has begun a probe into the incident.
