UK diaspora group to hold post-conference meeting
THE Jamaica Diaspora in the United Kingdom (UK) is to meet in Birmingham on Saturday to discuss, among other issues, the Terms of Reference for the proposed Joint Select Committee of Parliament on Diaspora Affairs.
The committee was one of the proposals made by Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller, at the Jamaica Diaspora Conference in Kingston in June this year.
The Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board members in the UK, the United States and Canada are required to submit proposals for the Terms of Reference of the Committee.
Members of the UK Advisory Board, Travis Johnson and Paulette Simpson, want the meeting to initiate consultations with the respective communities to get their input for the Terms of Reference.
The submissions must be made to the State Minister with responsibility for Diaspora Matters, Senator Delano Franklyn by August 31, 2006. Franklyn is the junior Minister in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade.
In letters to delegates who attended the June conference, community organisations, groups and individuals, the UK representatives urged consultations on the matter with members of organisations and the wider Jamaican community, in order to facilitate the process.
Saturday’s meeting, which will be held at the Afro-Caribbean Millennium Centre, will also include a review of the Jamaican conference.
