FORMER police commissioner and retired Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) colonel, Trevor MacMillan, is now a member of the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP).

MacMillan’s application for membership was accepted by the party’s Standing Committee on Monday night.

His acceptance by the party now clears the way for Opposition Leader Bruce Golding to formerly write Governor-General Professor Sir Kenneth Hall, recommending the former police chief as the next opposition senator.

Colonel MacMillan will replace former opposition senator Norman Horne, who resigned from the JLP, but held his senatorial appointment, and acted in an independent capacity for a short period.

Horne recently rejoined the ruling People’s National Party (PNP).

Widely respected in Jamaica and across the Caribbean, Colonel MacMillan was the first outsider to head the Jamaica Constabulary Force, serving from 1993 to 1996.

MacMillan recently headed a task force established by the Opposition to look at measures to deal with the country’s crime problem.
