Man held with £15,000, detained
DETECTIVES from Operation Kingfish, along with members of the Financial Investigation Division and Customs Enforcement Team, yesterday continued their interrogation of a 35-year-old man who was held with £15,000 at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay, St James Saturday night.
Kingfish operatives in England gathered intelligence about the man who had left that country for Jamaica with a large stack of cash and contacted their local counterparts. During processing by customs, a DVD player he had in his possession was found to contain £15,000.
The man, who is from Westmoreland, arrived in the island on a flight from London.
Two seniors die in Portland, Westmoreland fires
TWO senior citizens died in separate fire incidents since last night in Portland and Westmoreland.
They have been identified as 85-year-old Joseph Pennicook of Haining District, Manchioneal, Portland and 60-year-old Cleveland St Aubyn Bedesie, a resident of Springfield District, Westmoreland.
The Constabulary Communication Network (CCN) reported that at about 10:30 pm, neighbours saw fire coming from the house occupied by Pennicook and summoned the police. One unit from the Port Antonio Fire Department responded and extinguished the blaze. The remains of the senior citizen were found among the rubble and were removed to the morgue.
In the other incident, St Aubyn Bedesie died in a fire which destroyed a three-apartment board dwelling in Springfield District, Westmoreland.
The CCN said that at approximately 2:00 am, fire – suspected to have started from a lit cigar – engulfed the dwelling. Bedesie, who was removed from the premises after the arrival of firefighters, was taken to the Savanna-la-Mar Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Fire destroys building on SOS compound
FIRE on Saturday destroyed a building on the compound of the Save our Souls (SOS) Children’s Village in Barrett Town, St James. No one was injured in the blaze.
The CCN’s liaison officer reported that at about 12:30 pm, fire was seen coming from a section of the building. The fire brigade was summoned and two units, one from the Ironshore Fire Department and the other from Montego Bay extinguished the blaze. Loss is estimated at $5.5 million. The building was not insured.
Man dies from stab wounds
A man who was stabbed during an altercation with another man on Old Hope Road, Kingston 6, on Friday, died in hospital on Saturday.
He has been identified as Orville Brooks, otherwise called “Ninja”, of Old Hope Road.
The CCN’s metro officer said that at about 8:00 pm on Friday, Brooks and another man had a dispute, when the altercation escalated into a fight and a knife was allegedly used to stab Brooks.
