Cool news for heated firefighters in Sav
SAVANNA-LA-MAR, Westmoreland – Firefighters assigned to the Savanna-La-Mar Fire Department who last Tuesday protested against the deplorable conditions of the building where they are housed, could be relocated within a week.
Divisional head of the Westmoreland fire department, Superintendent Vincent Hylton said that a suitable building to house the firefighters had been identified on the Farm Pen main road in the town.
” We have looked at the two-storey building which was designed for a guest house and the firemen believe that it is workable,” Hylton said.
He added, however, that minor adjustments would have to be made to the building before it could be occupied by the firemen. The adjustments include repairs to the kitchen and the construction of a guard room, as well as installation of telephone lines and an alarm system.
Hylton expressed confidence that the necessary adjustments could be done within another seven days.
“In spite of the repairs and adjustments that need to be done, I am confident that everything can be in place within a week,” he said.
T uesday’s protest action by the more than 25 placardbearing firefighters was apparently triggered by torrential showers in the area on Monday night, which resulted in the flooding of sections of the building due to leaking roofs which forced the firefighters to evacuate their rest quarters.
