Magistrate blasts idling cops
SPANISH TOWN, St Catherine – Senior St Catherine Resident Magistrate Lorna Errar Gayle blasted the lackadaisical attitude of cops on duty at the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate’s Court last week, blaming them for slowing down court proceedings.
Police at the front door of the number one court were tardy in calling the names of persons waiting outside to face the court on various matters.
The angry magistrate who had to be shouting out names of persons whose cases were before her, accused the police of being slow in calling out the names and sternly instructed them to immediately find the persons and get them inside.
Some police officers were openly engaged in chatter, or appeared oblivious of their duties in court.
Abandoning the English language at times, an angry RM Gayle declared: “All a unoo police officers in here come out a court! All a unoo pack up in here an’ I have to be calling names. “I do not come here to call names, you know.”
Sixteen police officers, five of them in uniform, were counted in the courtroom at the time, most were sitting on a bench to the left corner of the room uninvolved in the proceedings of the court.
However, only one officer – a woman sergeant – was busy doing most of the work.
Following RM Gayle’s outburst, it was noticeable that witnesses and accused persons were brought in court with speed and the no-nonsense judge appeared more at ease with the proceedings.
