PNP says Assamba still candidate for SE St Ann
THE People’s National Party (PNP) has flatly denied reports that Tourism Minister Aloun Assamba has been replaced as the party’s candidate for South East St Ann in the next general elections.
“There is no move by the party to replace her,” PNP Region One chairman Mark Campbell told the Observer yesterday.
Campbell admitted that there were some concerns that have been raised by comrades in the constituency and that the concerns were being looked at.
However, he said, Assamba is still the party’s representative for South East St Ann.
Assamba, the sitting Member of Parliament who replaced veteran politician Seymour Mullings as PNP representative in 2002, has been under pressure by some of her constituents who have expressed the desire to have her replaced as candidate.
On October 13, placard-bearing constituents, including councillor for the Calderwood division, Vinnette Robb, staged a protest in Claremont demanding that Assamba be replaced.
“I am supporting the call for Assamba to step down,” Robb told the Observer then.
Since then the party has reportedly held several meetings to try and iron out the differences.
