BSI investigating police homicides
THE Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) is probing the fatal shooting of 23-year-old Jahami King by the police.
King was shot dead on Wednesday during an alleged confrontation between police and gunmen at Lower Ivy Road in Kingston.
The police say they also recovered two guns, a quantity of ammunition and a pair of two-way radios during the incident.
The police say they were carrying out an operation in the area when their investigations led them to a car wash operation at Lower Ivy Road, which runs off Lyndhurst Road. While there, they said they encountered King, who was running with a gun in his hand. They called out to King and he allegedly pointed the gun at them. The police say they fired and King was hit. He was taken to hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A Ruger 9mm pistol and 30 bullets were taken from his body. The police say a search of the community turned up a Taurus 9mm pistol and 16 rounds of ammunition as well as three magazines and a pair of walkie-talkies.
This is the second time in less than a week that the Kingston West police have been involved in a fatal shooting. Last week, angry residents of Hannah Town protested for days against the killing of 24-year-old Conroy ‘Dasheen’ Slater. Slater was killed by lawmen who say they intercepted a convoy of vehicles in which he and his cronies were travelling at Michael Manley Boulevard, and were fired upon. The fire was returned and Slater was shot, and at least five others injured, police say.
According to the police, Slater was wanted for the killing of 36-year-old Derrick Lewis, security guard and football coach at the Chetolah Park primary school. The gunman shot Lewis in the back of the head as he watched the opening of a primary school football match at a field behind the Tinson Pen aerodrome in St Andrew two weeks ago.
Since the incident, the Institute of Sports has announced that it will choose the venues which host primary school matches.
The five injured men have subsequently been charged with illegal possession of a firearm and shooting with intent, and will appear in court tomorrow.
The BSI is probing both incidents.
Since the start of the year the police in the Kingston West division have seized 43 illegal firearms.
