$5.4-m repair work for Jarrett Lane
JARRETT Lane, the tough community located off Mountain View Avenue in Kingston, is to be repaired at a cost of $5.4 million. Work is scheduled to be completed in another five months.
The Jamaica Social Investment Fund recently signed the road repair contract with Alcar Construction & Haulage Company Limited to carry out the works, which will comprise the rehabilitation of 1.5 kilometres of roadway. In addition, the Long Mountain Community Club, headed by Londy Ottey will provide another $1 million as community contribution.
According to Ottey, Jarrett Lane encompasses Jarrett & Saunders Avenue. However, the road is in a deplorable condition which makes it difficult to access integrated community space for training, recreation, sports and cultural activities. Furthermore, key service providers including the municipal authorities and the police have been greatly hindered in carrying out their duties.

Man to be sentenced today for ‘barrel’ murder
A man who murdered his girlfriend, then stuffed her body in a barrel at the home they shared in the Mountain View area of Kingston, will be sentenced at the Home Circuit Court today.
A 12-member jury convicted Ralston Baker on Tuesday for the stabbing death of Carol Harrison-Blair some time between August 25 and 27, 2004.
The couple’s landlady testified that she became concerned after some time had passed and she did not see Blair. Baker, however, told her that Blair was at the home of family members.
The witness further testified that on the same day Baker lied to her about his girlfriend’s whereabouts, she noticed him moving out of the house and later noticed a “fishy smell” coming from the couple’s side of the house before the police discovered the body.
