Gov’t to postpone local polls again
DEAN Peart, the local government and environment minister, is expected to table two bills in the House of Representatives tomorrow, postponing local government elections by a further six months.
Peart reported to the Cabinet yesterday on the developments surrounding the recent audits of the councils, done by his ministry’s internal auditors.
The audits of the St Mary, St Catherine and Westmoreland Parish Councils done by Peart’s ministry, as well as earlier audits of the Kingston and St Andrew Corporation (KSAC), which were undertaken by the contractor-general, are expected to be among the government’s reason for postponing the elections.
The Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), which had earlier expressed strong opposition to a further delay in holding the elections, which were due from June this year, is against using the audits as the reason for the postponement, but has already conceded that the elections can no longer be held by December 31, the current deadline.
