Smog over the city
Aerial view showing thick smoke rising from the Riverton City landfill in Kingston yesterday. Although both fires at the landfill have been put out, the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) says the thick blanket of smoke covering sections of the Corporate Area and St Catherine since last Thursday could last for another two days. The NSWMA says efforts to rid the place of smoke have been slowed by a shortage of heavy equipment that can move earth and other material to cover the areas of the dump from which the smoke has been coming. The cooling-down process is also being hampered by the fact that a number of the agency’s machines are either overworked or broken.
