No more thick smoke from Riverton landfill
PERSONS affected by the smoke caused by a fire two Fridays ago at the Riverton City dump should breathe easier starting today, as officials from the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) say 95 per cent of the fumes have dissipated.
Making good on a promise he made on Monday that the landfill would stop smoking by Tuesday evening, landfill manager at Riverton, Clive McDonald told the Observer last night that there was no longer any nuisance to surrounding communities.
“It’s been going well so far. From an operations point of view, we’ve closed down and there’s basically no smoke,” he said.
From his third floor office in Half-Way-Tree, Community Relations officer at the NSWMA Michael Richards, can look down at the dump and he reported seeing only a “little bit of evidence” of the smoke.
“The smoke is 95 per cent gone,” he said confidently. “You may still see a little in the morning but the difference between today and last week is phenomenal.”
