St Mary student held with ammunition
A Grade 10 student at a St Mary high school is being questioned by the St Mary police after he was held with one 9mm cartridge on the school compound on Monday.
According to the St Mary Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), the police were carrying out routine checks at the school when the student was searched and the ammunition found in his possession.
The student is to be referred to the Child Development Agency (CDA), which has responsibility for child protection services in Jamaica and which sees in the region of 60,000 cases annually.
However, a spokesperson at the CDA told the Observer that the incident was not a matter for the agency. Last year, during a similar routine check, the St Mary police recovered ahomemade gun from a student at another high school in the parish.
